Notes on dating | The post quem date is the derived from CIL 14, 00325 where the first donation on this inscription is also mentioned. The ante quem date is inferred from the biodates of P. Claudius Abascantus who financed this inscription. He is first attested in 177 CE (then still a slave) and was still alive in 203 CE (CIL 14, 00324) |

Notes |
The inscription was found in connection with the temple of Magna Mater in Ostia. The first donation mentioned, from Claudius Veratius Abascantianus is mentioned also in CIL 14, 00325, dating to 194 CE. The endowment of Cocilius Hermes is known from another inscription (AE 1987, 00198) to date to 256 CE.
The inscription was set up by (or belonged to a monument financed by) Abascantianus' father, P. Claudius Abascantus, who was a freedman of the Tres Galliae, the three provinces of Gaul (Lugdunnensis, Aquitania and Belgica) and twice quinquennalis of the dendrophori of Ostia (CIL 14, 00324).
(on Abascantus, his family and their relation to the dendrophori of Ostia see Herz 1989; Tran 2006: 129-131). So it was presumably set up at the time of the donation by his son in 194 CE and was subsequently kept to date until at least 256 CE.
It lists the proceeds from endowments (expressed in sesterces) owned by the association of the dendrophori and the birthdays of the benefactors on which day the proceeds (expressed in denarii) had to be distributed or spent. The list is divided into two columns; Most sums on the first column, containing the months of January to May are preserved. Endowments to a total of 43,000 sesterces are attested, the amount of one endowment in the first column is lost but is known from another inscription to have been 6000 sesterces (AE 1987, 00198), meant to yield 180 denarii. The preserved total of expected proceeds is 1340 denarii (5360 sesterces), which suggests an overall total of c. 2680 denarii (10,720 sesterces).
One item has neither a capital sum, nor the expected proceeds. One item only has the expected proceeds, which differ from all other listed yields (50 denarii). At 12% the corresponding capital would be an very odd sum (1666,666… sesterces). So presumaby in this case the endowment consisted of a parcel of land or real estate.
If the second column had comparable amounts the total capital in endowments held by the dendrophori rose to about 86,000 sesterces. All proceeds are based on the legal maximum interest rate of 12%.
Based on the order in which the birthdays are listed, at least 4 endowments on the first column were added after the inscription was first set up. Assuming that the second column was broadly similar the dendrophori would have received an endowment every 7 of 8 years in that period.
Besides the two Abascanti and Cocilius Hermes, two more benefactors are known from other inscriptions. Pomponius Quirinus born in May, who gifted 2000 sesterces, is probably one of the two C. Pomponii Quirini, father and son, who are listed as pat(er) p(atronus) p(erpetuus) in CIL 14, 00281 (c. 201-225 CE), C. Iulius Istorius Octavianus, born 20 January, who gifted 2000 sesterces is mentioned as patronus in the same inscription.
