[D(is)] M(anibus) / A(ulo) Egrilio A(uli) f(ilio) Secundo Trheptiano(!) / [de]cur(ioni) Laur(entium) vico Augustan(o) scrib(a) colleg(ii) fabr(um) tign(uariorum) Ost(iensium) decuriali scriptus cerar(i) / [t]ribuli tribus Pupiniae A(ulus) Egrilius Ision et Iulia Proba coniux fecerunt
Translation
To the God-Spirits of the Dead. For Aulus Egrilius Secundus Threptianus, son of Aulus, decurio of the Laurentes for the vicus Augustanus, scribe of the guild of carpenters/builders of Ostia, decurial scriba cerarius, tribe member of the Pupinia tribe. Aulus Egrilius Ision and Iulia Proba, his wife, have made this.
Notes on the source
Scribae cerarii ranked lower than scribae (librarii), although we shouldn't for that reason take the qualification cerarius (referring to tabulae ceratae, wax-tablets) literally. Decurialis implies that the deceased was a member of the decuria of such scribes, which in turn implies that this was not an office within the guild but a public office in Ostia.
