Notes on dating | post quem date provided by the legion title 'Pia Fidelis'. This was originally 'Pia Fidelis Domitiana', the latter was dropped after Domitian's death. An ante quem date can be inferred from the absence of the title 'Antoniana' which was conferred on the Legio XX Valeria Victrix by Caracalla, probably in 211 BCE after the campaigns in the north of Britain under Septimius Severus, and on the Legio X Gemina Pia Fidelis by Caracalla or Heliogabalus. Unfortunately no honourary titles are mentioned for the legions in which the Anonymous served as centurion. |
