Notes |
A funerary inscription for a faber tignuarius from a columbarium in the suburbs of Rome. The title magister in familia probably has no connection to a collegium, but rather refers to the deceased's being the master craftsman in a work force (familia). It similarly cannot be taken for granted that the decuria over which the decease was praefectus was a division of the collegium fabrum tignuariorum.
Another inscription mentions a magister praefectus in familia (AE 2001, 0576 a-c (2))

Standard text of source |
M(arcus) Allius / Apollonius / faber tignuarius / mag(ister) in fam(ilia) praef(ectus) dec(uriae aut -urio?) / vix(it) an(nos) LX
|
Translation |
Marcus Allius Apollonius, carpenter/builder, foreman ('master of a team'), prefect of a division (decuria?) (or prefect, decurio) has lived 60 years.
|
Notes on the source |
The reading decurio instead of decuriae is less likely because praefectus requires some entity over which Apollonius was prefect, while decurio would likewise require such an entity.
