Notes on dating | Leveau and Gascou (1996: 246-247)( following Constans) date this inscription 'au plus tôt, dans les dernière décennies du Ier siècle ap. J.-C.', but without arguments. DM abbreviated in Arles indicates a date after c. 100 CE. 'Merenti' becomes more common in the later second century. The tria nomina last longer in Narbonnensis than elsewhere. The genitive case for the deceased is common in Gallia Narbonnensis. |

Notes on the source |
Leveau and Gascou 1996: esp. 246-247 This inscription is preserved only in a manuscript. There are difficulties with its reading: We would expect PRIMI, not PRIMO. COSNA is non-sensical, Mommsen suggested COGNA(to) There is a discussion on the interpretation of ART (see CIL and Leveau and Gascou), but ART(ifici) makes perfect sense. |
