| Notes on dating | The archaeological context to which the inscription belongs appears to be early third century (Benoît 1966: 192), but the inscription probably belongs with the statue that it mentions and may be older. The 'tria nomina' and tribe indicate a date not too far into the third cnetury (Kneissl (1981: 203) suggests second century; Liu (2009: 364, no. 133) late second or early third century). |

The inscription was on the pedestal of a statue to Mercury, set up in the public baths, on behalf of the 'collegia' mentioned in the inscription.
The singular collegio fabrum utricla/riorum et centonariorum is noteworthy, but several other inscriptions from Cemenelum mention the tria collegia (CIL 5, 7881; 7905; AE 1965, 00194). See Liu 2009: 136; Benoît 1966: 164 for a discussion.
Liu 2009: 136 considers but rejects the possibility that collegio fabrum utriclarium et centonariorum would indicate a separat group of fabri utriclarii.

Statue of Mercurius. Caius Cassius Paternus, son of Caius, of the Claudia tribe, decurio, patron of the guild of utriclarii has given (this) as a gift and dedicated (it), on which day he has given hand-outs and oil to the guild of craftsmen, utriclarii, and clothmen.
