Notes on dating | Dated: the 'collegium fabrum tignuariorum' of Ostia was founded between 58 and 62 CE, so the hard post quem date is 57 CE. Wierschowski 2001 (416, no. 592) dates the inscription to the first century, but without arguments. Rohde (2012: 168) assumes that Epitynchanus was a collibertus of L. Antonius Peculiaris who was 'quinquennalis' of the 'collegium fabrum tignuariorum' during the 25 'lustrum' (178-186 CE). But this is by no means certain. Rüpke (2005: 767, no. 656) merely notes 'early empire'. Scheid and Granino (1999: 140, no. LIC 5) refrain from dating. The tria nomina and the relative brevity of the inscription suggest a pre-third century date. |
