Name Primius Secundus, C.
Gender male
Gentilicia PRIMIA
Cognomina Secundus
Tribus

Notes on life data His son's sarcophagus dates to the late 2nd or early 3rd c. Primus died before then, because his funerary inscription is placed by his son.
Geography notes Note that he was sevir augustalis of the colonia at Lugdunum, but 'patronus of the fabri tignuarii Lugduni consistentes' were he had traversed all ranks. Presumably therefore he was not a native from Lugdunum, but came from elsewhere.

Status notes and comments <div>In view of his position as 'sevir agustalis', he may be a freedman, but we should note that his own son also became a 'sevir augustalis', although he was freeborn, while his gentilicium Primius points to a Romanised Celtic background. I am therefore inclined to believe that Secundus too was freeborn. &nbsp;</div>

<div>Most likely Secundus started as a carpenter/builder (contractor), rising through the ranks of the guild until eventually becoming its patron. Then he became a barge skipper on the Rhone and was appointed 'praefectus' of that corporation. His office as 'sevir augustalis' and his curatorship of that association probably predates the 'praefectura', since that position was usually bestowed on high ranking non-members. &nbsp; His son, M. Primius Secundianus (CIL 13, 01966, see also his biogram), would later follow in his father's footsteps as barge skipper on the Rhone, obtaining a license (?) also to sail on the Saone. He started a business as dealer in 'muria', salted fish (sauces) and perhaps related pickled wares. He was as accepted member 'among' the carpenters/builders ('inter fabro tignuarios'), which probably means that he did not himself practice that trade anymore, even though he might still have been connected to his father's network and perhaps have retained investments in the building trade.</div>
